The Performance (LecDem)

Created and originally performed as a lecture demonstration at Royal Holloway uol in 2018,

The Performance has since travelled and evolved, echoing my artistic practice and creative process.

I am interested in what dance is and the ways we see is. More like, the ways we experience dance and the ways we experience through dance. There seems to be a strong connection between action and perception. They are “intimately linked” as philosopher Alva Noe beautifully puts it.

“Seeing is a kind of temporary extended interaction with the environment  he goes on to claim, and I agree.

Much unlike the Thinking Man sculpture, the way we experience the world is dynamic, continuously in flux and in constant conversation with ALL of our proprioceptive tools. The world around us changes according to our position in it, our posture, our bowel movements, our mood and sensations and many more. So, I like to think of dancing as an act of playing with the world.

Dancing is my way of realising impossible universes

Movement is my way of being free within them

My Body is my way towards my only truth… Truth?

And with performing and witnessing dance, we get to share this play with each-other!

In fact, there is scientific evidence showing that while witnessing movement, we are able to internally simulate movement sensations of speed, effort and body configuration changes. In other words, we sense movement rather than simply seeing it. The term Kinaesthetic Empathy is used to refer to this fascinating ability of ours.

When composing dance, the realm of perception becomes our playground. We craft a new language, unique to that dance and everyone involved, and engage in a multi-layered, yummy re-experiencing of reality. Sometimes it makes total sense, other times it doesn’t. It definitely doesn’t have to; and there, for me, lies dance’s great beauty.

How do you see when you look at a dance?

Try with your eyes

Try with your skin

Try with your heart

Try with your memories

Try with your ears

or maybe your whole body

Whichever way you choose, enjoy it:  you’re absolutely right!
